Don’t throw those old photos away

Ken Johnston

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
That was apparently true when someone in Dryden found a folder in the landfill site there.
It contained information and several interesting items belonging to H. G. Gorham and was dated back to the early 1900s.
How it ended up in the Dryden dump is a mystery. How it got back to Rainy River is not.
Someone found it and knew that one of their friends, a Berard, was from Rainy River originally. He gave the folder to him. He in turn gave it to Bud Hannam of Rainy River.
Bud remembers the descendants of H. G. Gorham. As far he knows that none of them ever settled in the Dryden area... so he is baffled how it ended up there.
Inside the folder was Mr. Gorham’s will and some

really neat trip passes and a curler’s ticket that date back to 1903 (see flashback photo album page fourteen).
I can only guess how it ended up there. Sometimes when a parent dies many of their prized possessions get thrown out as family does not know what they are about. I remember about 10 years ago Gerald Fadden brought in some old photos he found in the Rainy River dump. One of the photos was of Gig vanNorman’s dad operating the Rainy River power plant in 1913. It was an incredible find.
I love those historic pictures and other similar goodies. So if you are going through a loved one’s old pictures and don’t know what they are all about, don’t throw them out... we would love to share them with everyone. –Until then, Ken
