Their and your job this election

There is a fever spreading across the Rainy River District and the only antidote will be administered on October 25, 2010 when the electorate casts their ballots.
Yes it is municipal election time and from a few weeks ago when it seemed there was little interest in governing locally, there now is a great deal of it.
In several townships there are elections and in Rainy River and Lake of the Woods there are so many people running for office it will truly make for an interesting election.
In Rainy River there are eight seeking four seats for council. In LoW there are 10 seeking four seats for council.
Each of these citizens deserve kudos for being willing to stick their necks on the line for their towns. Having grown up with my dad as the town clerk of RR for more than 30 years and having covered municipal politics at the paper for 21+ years I can tell you first hand, that it can be a thankless job.
Many hours for little pay, but if you put that aside and are running for the right reason, to better our community, then the rewards can be huge!
Getting positive things done without raising taxes is a delicate balancing act. Councillors have to think of the best interests of the community and not serve their own personal agenda.
While the candidates have taken a big and brave step by letting their names stand for nomination, the next task at hand belongs to the voters. Your responsibility is to ask the candidates what they hope to accomplish if elected. You also need to talk about your hopes and worries for the community and get their views on them. Once you have gathered that information your last task is to vote for who you think will do the best job as a council member for the next four years.
–Until then,
