What would life be like without gasoline?
As the price of gasoline continues to rise I have been thinking about what our lives would be like of no one could drive cars due to a lack of energy to do so.
At first I thought life as we know it would be over. But it really has only been 100 years since we started driving automobiles powered by gasoline.
Car companies are promoting electric cars, but we all know where electricity prices are going and how often there is a shortage of electricity. Imagine what would happen to prices and supply if we all plugged in our cars?!
People would likely have to revert to the way life was lived before we had the car.
Many people would have to move closer to rivers and perhaps even rail lines. Afterall trains and boats could go back to running on coal, a commodity the earth still has lots of.
That would mean towns that have faded away, like Pinewood, Stratton, etc. could be burgeoning with activity again having both boats and trains bringing them supplies.
Country stores, schools and churches would rise again. Horses would likely be used again to travel to town where possible and maybe even to move goods.
People would likely garden/farm more as they would not be as able to run to town for fresh vegetables, etc.
People who use heating oil or propane would have to switch to electric or wood in areas away from town since fill trucks would have no gasoline to drive there.
Snow blowing and mowing lawns would have to change as well. Back to manual mowers and shovesl we would go!
Life would certainly be different without gasoline. It might be considered a simpler way of life by some, and to others more trying.
–Until then,
