In search of tasty tomatoes

Tasty tomatoes are something I enjoy. Especially ones from our own garden.
But this time of year gardens are buried under snow and we haven't even begun to start seeds for the upcoming summer.
So it is off to the grocery store we go. But I have found that at this time of year tasty ones are hard to find.
If you are like me then you judge a tomato by its look and feel... of course I would love to be able taste them to, but that never seems to be one of those things they offer you a sample of in the aisles of even the biggest stores.
So a nice red and firm tomato usually makes it into my grocery cart and hopes of it being delicious go home with it.
But this time of year, it seems that even the most delicious looking tomato lacks flavour; in some cases no flavour at all!
A couple of weeks ago tomatoes were on sale. The old saying "If it sounds to good to be true, it likely is" applied. They looked good, felt firm and were a bargain.
But upon sampling them it became clear that they were hard to chew and lacked flavour.
It makes me wonder how tomatoes in the summer can be so tasty and how the ones in the stores this time of year are not?!?
Someone told me not to store them in the fridge and they would have more taste. But tried that and there was no improvement.
For the most part they just aren't that good at this time of year. But every once in a while I find some that are delicious and then I end up going back and buying more. My taste buds are tingling right now, just thinking about a delicious fresh mater!
Can't wait for garden ones, but until then I will keep searching the produce aisle at the grocery store hoping I will hit the jackpot!

–Until then,
Ken
