Flashing back to the 80s with the Owls
If you are like me, then, last week, you found yourself recollecting what it was like to have a team do well at RRHS when I went to school.
I sat in the gym with my camera ready to roll, my notepad in hand and surrounded by many of my former schoolmates children.
I found myself going back, way back to the 1980s when perms, mullets and fluorescent clothing were in... I think the last item came to mind when I saw several kids wearing such clothing on Friday... trends do seem to repeat themselves!
Back then it was not a regular occurence for teams to go to the All Ontarios. In fact it was rare for teams to advance to NORWOSSAs and win. I guess that was why it was so exciting for me and I am sure everyone back then.
A curling team, if I remember correctly, went to the All Ontarios and I am not sure but I think they won, back then.
Other than that the only other time from grade 9 to 13 that I remember a team getting to the big show was a senior girls basketball team coached by Curtis Coons. Many of my classmates were on that team. It was so exciting and without the internet we have today, updates were limited to long distance phone calls from eastern Ontario back to the school. Once they arrived, a crackle of the intercom would be heard and Principal L.D. Fraser would tell us the news!
Friday the kids around me seemed genuinely excited and I am sure that many of them will be waiting for updates as the Owls play next week, but they will be waiting fo the updated to come to their pockets where smart phones will receive them as the games are happening!
–Until then, Ken
