Duck race could be even more fun!

It has been and has the potential to be an even bigger and more entertaining part of the Canada festivities.
I am speaking of the KidSport duck race that was held here on Canada Day.
It was once run by the Rainy River Fire Dept. and was called the Kenducky Derby. The firemen went door to door selling ducks.
People purchased or adopted them for $5, just the same as they did this past weekend. When you paid your $5 you received an official adoption certificate... part of the fun!
The firemen learned quickly that the race is just not as simple as dumping the rubber duckies into the Rainy River and expect them to race downstream with the current.
In fact, every year was a bit different. Some years the ducks did in fact race simply with the current. But many years the wind, which prevails from the west here, was stronger than the current and the ducks would actually go upstream. One year they dropped the ducks downstream and they did race back up the river.
A good practise the firemen had was to take a few test ducks out an hour or so before the race and see what happened when they were placed in the water. That way they could drop the ducks with optimal appeal to the spectators on the dock.
This year, run by KidSport, organizers thought they should drop them on the US side of the river and they would blow back towards the dock. But that did not happen. The ducks raced down the US side of the river and the fans could not enjoy the race without binoculars.
I think another great idea would be to have someone in a boat following the progress and reporting back to shore with a two way radio or cell phone so that a commentator could give a play by play! Don't get me wrong... it was still fun on Friday, especially when my future step-son had the winning duck! I just think it could be even more fun!
This community has many zany characters in it that make things so much fun... just look at what Jack Elliott and co have done with the Card Board Duct Tape Boat Races!

–Until then,
