Dodged that bullet again
After seeing that whopper of a green pepper brought in by Fran Faragher last week, I harvested all my tomatoes and the last of the green beans from my garden.
I gave many of them to my neighbours since I was going to be away on the weekend. However, I had a pail of green tomatoes sitting on the counter at home.
Anticipating frost I conceded that my gardening season was over.
But the two days where it was supposed to come were in fact near misses for me. One day the thermometer dropped to 36F and the next to 33.4F.
Oh well. I could have left them in the garden for a few more days.
Then over the weekend where I was it was a heavy frost there that had me convinced that my garden would be done when I arrived home.
However, to my shock, when I exited the garage early Monday morning, having arrived back from 100 miles south where it did frost, my garden was untouched by an early visit from Old Man Winter.
As well, the flower pots on the deck and front porch were still in full bloom. I hadn't even bothered to water them before I left thinking they would be frozen over the weekend.
So I have dodged the bullet and now it sounds like it is going to be frost free and even up towards 80 F this coming weekend!
I may get another crop of tomatoes again before the threat of freezing returns!
–Until then,
Ken
