We have great tourism potential
I have heard it for years at every fishing tournament I have been to. People are fishing for walleye to win at the RRWT and bass at other tournaments and they come in saying they caught many other species.
This past weekend many of the anglers said they hauled in plenty of Northern Pikes.
This year's champs even took a break from the relatively slow walleye bite to try their hand bass fishing. They said the bass on the Rainy River are phenomenal!
Jason Gibbins said the river is primed for what could be a spectacular bass tournament.
I have thrown the idea out a few times when speaking to people at various tournaments. Wouldn't it be fun to have a multi-species tournament over three days.
One day could be Northern Pike, one day Bass and another Walleye. Or perhaps each day could be a mix. Say the biggest basket containing a walleye, a pike, a bass and a perch.
Would be fun and interesting.
Or perhaps there is potential to have a Pike tourney, a walleye tourney and a bass tourney at three different times.
Of course this would mean many more volunteers would be needed.
The core that run the RRWT work all year just to get one tourney on its feet every year.
Perhaps since the big tent is not getting used by many other groups it could be set up most of the summer and host a variety of events on the waterfront. Fishing derbies, special farmers markets, music festivals, etc. Take it down and move it when Morson has their tournament and for Relay for Life in RR.
I know all this sounds like dreams of grandeur, but the potential is there. We under market our tourism potential right here in Rainy River every year.
Instead of making this a destination we watch the boats and tourists go right by our town.
–Until then,
Ken
