Province needs to change its tune
Here we go again. Toronto does not understand the logistics of where we are and is refusing to do the sensible thing.
If we end up with no emergency room services the province will not fund saving your life if you go to Baudette, Minnesota since it is out of province/country.
Now the word "emergency" says it all. it means you need urgent medical attention. So it makes sense to go to the closest emergency services when a life is threatened.
Well with the provincial government refusing to pay if you went to Baudette, the alternative to Rainy River is Fort Frances.
I have done many stories over the years with medical professionals. Paramedics refer to the "Golden Hour" as crucial to treating many kinds of emergencies.
So if you live in Rainy River, only 55 miles from Fort Frances, you might just make it within that hour if the ambulance gets to your door right away.
However, live a few miles north of town or as far as Morson away and that golden hour may stretch to as much as two hours.
How much is a person's life worth? We all pay taxes in Ontario and Canada, of which a big portion goes towards providing us with a right to universal health care.
It would seem to me that while efforts to find full time doctors are under way, that if we end up with no ER coverage the province could anti up to cover the costs in Baudette to save lives.
It wasn't that many years ago where patients needing CT scans in Fort Frances could go to International Falls, MN and the province would pay the bill.
We need to support our local politicians and begin lobbying the province to change this policy before someone dies.
–Until then,
