What's in a cup of coffee?
What's in a cup of coffee?
I have heard that saying for years... not sure what it means to others, but lately for me it has more to do with flavour and quality of beans.
Now I am no expert on coffee, other than I know that if I do not get it in the morning I get pretty crabby.
In my early years at the Record we used to drink it all day long. The pot would brew early and by mid-day you could stand a spoon up in it! Making fresh coffee was not a necessity.... the stronger the better!
My publisher said that to be in this business, you had to have printer's ink in your veins... I think the coffee we drank back then was at the very least ink... probably closer to road tar.
Then as time went by I became more fussy about my coffee.
I still drank it black but liked it fresh. I swore I would never drink flavoured coffee and as long as it was Foldgers or Maxwell House I was good to go!
Then a few years ago, one of my other bosses, Linda Plumridge, started bringing fresh ground coffee, from the Coffee Landing in International Falls, to our Thursday morning meetings. Ethiopia Blend was and still is one of my favourites! But the rest of the week I went happily back to my Foldgers or Maxwell House.
A little over a year ago my brother Pete and his wife Janine brought my fiancee Kim some Hazelnut Vanilla beans to try. I was almost immediately hooked. Yes I now love freshly ground coffee beans. So much so that drinking regular run of the mill coffee is almost a turn off.
I find myself saying, I wish I had some of the good stuff today!
It is funny how our tastes evolve over time.
–Until then,
Ken
