Respecting Mother Nature
Often we forget that we are mere mortals living on this world.
Humans often think they can control so much of the world around them. We build, sculpt and mold the earth into what we want. But when it comes down to it we really are not that much in control.
However, Mother Nature has much more control over the destiny of this world than we will ever have.
Last week family and friends living in the Bemidji area found that out first hand when a storm packing 80 mph straight line winds hit. Trees were knocked down everywhere, taking with them many power lines.
At my fiancee's place she lost two trees, had the skirting on her home blown away and the roof damaged to the point of leaking.
After it was over the community pulled together and helped one another, much the same as happened here a decade ago after we had similar storms and flooding.
We also received word that our favourite place to camp, the Norway Beach Recreation Area, was decimated by the winds.
With all that damage by Mother Nature, it is a true miracle that no one was killed or injured by the storm.
Another storm the next day saw my fiancee locked in Walmart there as fears of a tornado rang through the air. Fortunately it passed with no tornado or damage.
I felt helpless 100 miles away as these two events occurred. But I have a new found respect for the power of Nature.
I went down on the weekend and spent much of it fixing her place and cleaning up downed trees. I am so thankful no one was killed or hurt.
–Until then,
Ken
