Garden veggies are better than candy!

While so many facets of agriculture will be celebrated at the Emo Fair this week, I was celebrating one in particular this past weekend.
Every year I grow a small garden eight feet by eight feet.
Some years I have done really well and others mediocre. But last week this year's harvest culminated when I took two large bags of green and yellow beans and tomatoes from my garden and cucumbers, carrots and potatoes from my Uncle Bob's garden to Bemidji.
As the first tomato and cuke were sliced up and eaten, a certain glow came across all our faces.
The kids even seemed to enjoy the fresh cukes more than candy or ice cream!
We also ate beans every night of the weekend. They seem to be good with any dish; steak, chops or roast beef!
Sunday evening the tomatoes, carrots and cukes were put out as part of a big veggie tray! What a treat!
And after hearing some of the techniques used by commercial farms far away to keep our veggies in the stores fresh, I am so glad we can have something free of chemicals, grown right in our backyards!
Soon the gardens will fade and all that will remain will be the canned or frozen goodies to have during the winter.
–Until then,
Ken
