Rain, rain go away and don’t come again
Ken Johnston
I have heard of Christmas in July, but never July in December.
The unusually mild weather in November has continued into December and on Saturday clashed full force with winter weather.
Rain showers fell as though it were July. However, as the sun went down and the temperatures dropped the rain turned to ice on the ground. By late evening Saturday the sidewalks and streets were in effect outdoor skating rinks. Some places still have more than a quarter of an inch of ice on them.
People were slipping and sliding in their vehicles and walking anywhere was treacherous to say the least. Two of my friends, who live four houses up the street took ten minutes to walk down to my
place because of the ice that night.
Then power went out in certain parts of town. For a while there I thought we were going to be the next Ottawa ice storm.
Fortunately the rain eventually turned to a mix of rain and snow and then eventually to snow. By morning there was a layer of ice covered with a layer of crusty snow that one could get traction on.
The weather has been weird all of this year, especially in the summer when we barely had any heat. So why should December be any different. It leaves me wondering if we will have a green Christmas and if it will get subtropical in January.
–Until then,
Ken
