Why they call it The Super Bowl

Ken Johnston

I was wondering why they call the National Football League championship The Super Bowl?
The trophy is not shaped like a bowl. In fact, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, looks more like a football on a pyramid.
The Stanley Cup is in the shape of a cup. So why do they call it the Super Bowl?
While I am sure this is not the real reason, it makes sense to me.
A group of us get together whenever we can over the course of the football season and watch our favourite team, the Minnesota Vikings, play each week (Oh yeah there is one fan who likes some other team... the Denver Ponies or something like that ...). Every time we get together we snack on a bit of this and a bit of that. You know the usual stuff; chips, dip, wings, etc.
Sometimes we take turns making something and sometimes we just bring whatever.
Well come Super Bowl time we expand our usual group by a few... and since it is a “Super” event... we usually super-size our snacks.
Sunday was no exception. I made a double batch of my famous Super Bowl Dip.
Another guy made a huge batch of his super secret recipe hot wings.
The host house made crab dip, veggies and dip, a cream cheese nacho dip, perogies and put out regular chips and dip.
Needless to say we needed a Super Bowl to put all the food in. Everything was Super, including the game, the fixins and the company.
