No Sponge Bob in this Mouth

Ken Johnston

Who ever thought buying a toothbrush would be so difficult?
On a recent trip away from Rainy River I discovered that I had forgotten my toothbrush. So I went to a big box store to get one and to my amazement there was an entire aisle of toothbrushes.
I could not believe that there were that many toothbrushes to choose from.
Whatever happened to the simple soft, medium and strong straight laced brushes?
As a kid that is all I remember.
As a teenager I discovered the latest technology in toothbrushes was that of the amazing Reach Toothbrush. Bent on an angle to look sort of like a dentist’s tool. Of course they were so expensive that I never was able to try one until I was on my own. By then they were as cheap as the regular

straight brushes.
Then came the brushes with the coloured bristles in the middle that when the colour faded meant it was time for a new brush.
Fancy gripped ones, angled in different ways, coloured bristles, none of that would compare to today’s newfangled brushes.
I watch a mom and a kid shop for a new brush. The kid went right for the Sponge Bob battery operated brush and mom put it in the cart.
Of course the new fangled battery operated brush is all the rage with the kids and that means it costs more.
I wondered if they work as good or better than the manual ones? None the less, I settled on a simple angled, Reach, type brush, for less than a buck... no Sponge Bob in this mouth! –Ken
