Railroad Daze will not be moved

Ken Johnston

I am not sure who was having more fun at the Rec. Board’s annual slowpitch tournament finals Sunday evening.
The players of the two teams were having a pretty good time but so were the hecklers all of which worked very hard to get the goat of several well know players.
Those players, Don Gall, Kirk Wood and Jim Chorney really took the heckling well and even played it up for the crowd.
Everyone was laughing and the game seemed to be that much more fun for those on the field and in the stands.
The ball tournament is always a key staple in the success of Railroad Daze and with that in mind I must set the record straight.
Last week I wrote in this column that the powers that be were looking to move Railroad Daze to Canada Day.
I had a conversation with Rainy River Recreation Director Monique Gall who said unequivocally that the Rec. Board has no intention of moving Railroad Daze from the third weekend in July. They can not see how they could have a ball tournament on July 1st when Barwick has a tournament every year on that date.
As for how much was going on during Railroad Daze this year... yes there was less than some of the early years, but there was quite a number of events organized by the Rec. Board and other groups. If we want more going on we have to do two things:
1. Step up and volunteer to organize more activities; and
2. Support them.
There were no teams registered for the 3 on 3 basketball tournament... and turnout for both dances was pretty slim.
I do apologize for the confusion I created last week about the moving of Railroad Daze.
–Until then,
Ken
