The age of wisdom
The old saying “Wisdom comes with age,” must be why the third molars are called Wisdom Teeth.
Well my old age has brought me my wisdom teeth of late... and boy are they bugging me.
Most people get them in their late teens and early twenties... typically called the age of wisdom. That refers to the age when people are thought to become wiser, passing from childhood to adulthood.
I guess I took a little longer to become wiser.
Lately I have had trouble concentrating because of the constant pressure and sometimes pain in my jaw. It feels like I have a constant tension headache.
My first thought when I learned about what was causing the pain and pressure was, “Why do they call them Wisdom Teeth?” Certainly does not seem very wise for them to come in and push all my other teeth forward and cause me discomfort.
Well it seems in the past century man has
become a lot better at taking care of his regular teeth. Fewer and fewer people are losing their teeth these days, hence when the good old age of wisdom comes, there often is not enough room for them to come in.
Before we started taking such good care of our smiles, man often would lose his or her permanent teeth and the third molars would serve a purpose... very wise on God’s part!!
Well in preventing one problem we have created another... fortunately we have also worked on rectifying that problem... surgery.
In a few weeks I will go and exchange one form of pain for another that will eventually lead to no pain.
In the mean time I will have to tolerate the wise old pain... thank goodness for ibuprophen.
Until then,
