Will Harper surprise us today?
Will Prime Minister Harper prove to be a very smart politician today?
He will unveil his first federal budget today and everyone is expecting him to cut the Goods and Services Tax as well as bring in his $1,200 per child care allowance.
For weeks, in fact ever since he was elected, their has been loud calls for him to keep those promises but not to take away some of the previous government’s doings.
For the lowest tax bracket there was a 1% reduction in personal income tax from 16% to 15% and a raising of the Basic Personal Exemption. Harper has hinted that he will repeal that to pay for the loss of GST revenue.
The previous government also signed deals with provinces for the creation of childcare spaces. Prime Minister Harper has said those deals will be
honoured for one year and then likely axed.
However, today he may or may not pull a rabbit out of his hat. He has shown that he likes to keep us media types at arms length and is good at it. So with so many of the leaks in government plugged, what is in the budget other than this five pillars promised in the election, is a secret
He may very well use the excessive surplus expected to please many more people by leaving the tax breaks in place and funding day care spaces.
After all he can afford it and will make a lot of political points and prove that he is the one making the decisions, not the media.
–Until then,
