Learning about the birds and bees...
Have you ever learned about the birds and the bees and the butterflies?
No this is not going where you might think.
About five years ago my mom bought me a magazine on perennial gardening. I never really thought it would amount to much... but later that year I dug up my front yard and started a perennial garden.
I had my successes and failures and am still learning about what grows well (besides the weeds) and what does not.
Over the weekend that five year old garden taught me something else. It taught me about the birds and the bees and the butterflies. No my parents did not sit me down in the middle of the garden and explain to me why they have no grandchildren from me yet (a topic for another time... wink wink!).
I was working on my car in the front of the house when something caught my eye. It was the fluttering of a butterfly around the flower garden.
Not long after that I donned my camera and wandered into the garden standing absolutely still. It was not long and I realized there was more life to that 15@15 garden than flowers and shrubs. It was teaming with activity.
The butterflies were showing me which species of flowers they preferred. The bees (several species) were also busy working away on their favourites.
Then a whirrrrr went by my head and stopped over the bee balm and then darted to the trailing petunias. It was a humming bird.
Amazing what we can see if we look.
