What is this cold weather good for?
Where will the first pipes burst?
With weather this cold (-34C and -27F) and very little snow cover it is a miracle that we have not seen geysers popping up out of the streets yet.
It seems that we are now doing penance for the extremely mild and dry fall and winter we have had to date.
The first forecast for the surge of arctic air was about five days... well I have heard that is now looking like it will be here possibly for as long as ten days! Yikes!
So what good is this weather?
Over the weekend my buddy Jim and I split a whole bunch of firewood... -40 makes even elm easier to split. I bet a guy could split ash or birch with a hammer and a screw driver in this cold wave.
The weather being like this generally makes people stay at home which in turn limits the spread of things like colds, the flu, etc.
Heat commodity suppliers like natural gas and fuel oil like this weather. It is good for their business as people turn their thermostats up to keep warm. But on the other side of that coin we need a lot more coins to pay the heat bills when it is cold.
Another good thing about it is there are definitely no bugs around to pester us.
And the only other thing I can think of that is good about it is that it makes me think about spring and the eventual camping trips we will take in only 3 months, 3 days, 7 hours, 28 minutes, 12 seconds....
That is unless we get a freak snowstorm in May!
–Until then,
Ken
