We are very fortunate!

By Kendall Olsen
Riverview Principal

Sometimes fortune comes by way of being in the right place at the right time. Other times it comes with a good idea and some hard work. So on two accounts Riverview School is considering itself fortunate.
This past Thursday, Kendra Halvorsen, the grade 4/5 teacher attended an afternoon presentation in Fort Frances put on by Pearson Education. They are one of Canada’s largest publishers of educational materials. They were pitching their latest balanced literacy program called Literacy in Action. It is a fantastic program but comes with a lofty price tag of $ 3 000.00 dollars per grade. Ouch! As the story goes, the company had a draw for the grade four package of material and Kendra was fortunate enough to win it. Congratulations Kendra!
Along the lines of literacy, Riverview is once again fortunate to have the Ontario Early Years Centre offer to come in and do the Book and a Bite program for our primary students. The children enjoy the snacks and the great stories read by guest readers.
Thanks to out to Gabe Langlais for her coordination efforts and thanks to all of the guest readers and those who make this great program possible.
On a different note Heather Anderson and the members of school council applied last fall to the Ministry of Education for funding that the Ministry put out to promote healthy living and parental involvement.
Heather’s idea of a community event was looked on favourably and funding was granted. Riverview was the only school in our Board to receive individual funding for such a project.
Congratulations Heather and council members! Our school community is feeling fortunate and everyone is looking forward to the upcoming event.
