This will be a bizarre week!
While Halloween is usually a strange time of year, this week promises to be exceptionally bizarre for me. Anyone who has lived in Rainy River for the past 25 years knows that my mom, Norma-Jean Johnston, loves Halloween. She never ever fails to come up with a new way to scare, trick and treat kids and adults alike at her 203 3rd St. home each Oct. 31st. However, this year she will be notably absent from the scene as she has to go in for some surgery today (Oct. 30th). While I have known my dad to be scary at times, he just won’t cut it as a replacement this year. So this year they will just give out treats at their place, but Mom promises to be back twice as scary next year! I wish her a speedy recovery! Also making things strange this week will be a major computer upgrade here at the Record. While the actual computers themselves are not the scary part, we will be without them for about two days beginning today... what we will do without them is a mystery to me! Once they come back we will also be using a brand new layout and design program. This will be the last column I write on a program called QuarkXpress. We have been using it since Sept. of 1989 so it will be a big change for us. So I am sure there will be a few glitches in the paper next week so please bear with us. I am sure we will smooth out the wrinkles in no time flat. –Until then, Ken
