Incredible changes in communication

Sunday morning my telephone rang at 9 a.m. I picked it up and to my surprise it was my brother Peter.
He sounded like he was in the next room, but in actual fact he was half a world away in England.
Pete has been over there working for several months and will hopefully be home this weekend; back in Winnipeg.
Ever since he moved to Winnipeg several years ago, we have always tried to call one another on Sunday mornings, around the same time. But when he left for England we were resigned to emailing back and forth over the internet.
So Sunday I was pleasantly surprised and amazed and how simple transatlantic communication is.
That being said I decided to some research on the matter and discovered that until the 1870s the quickest possible way to get a message across the ocean would take a week.
Then came telegraph cables. First a few and then many. It was not until the advent of space travel in the mid-1900s that we stopped depending on cables. Satellites in the 1960s revolutionized the way we communicate around the world.
So for Pete it was as simple as picking up the phone in his English flat and dialing up me in my Canadian house.
It is amazing how quickly things have improved in the past century.
It makes me wonder how we will communicate in the decades to come... perhaps it will be instant video link? Only time will tell.
–Until then,
