We have a real problem here
We have a problem here in Rainy River that needs to be dealt with.
While the vast majority of dog owners are responsible there are a few that are making life very miserable for the rest of us.
Last Tuesday my Grandma Jean Heard was walking from my parents place (203 3rd St.) with her little tea cup Pomeranian Cuddles to the hospital to entertain the residents there with piano music.
It was dark and Grandma has a hard time seeing when it is like that. Cuddles was walking behind her and stopped to pee on the edge of the road by the lane way just behind the library.
While she was squatting a big black dog that was running loose came up from behind and attacked her. On a leash and peeing she did not stand a chance against this animal.
Suffering from a huge wound, a punctured lung and blood loss, Cuddles had to be put to sleep that night in Fort Frances.
Now this is not the first time this has happened in Rainy River in the past couple of years. Rick and Donna Hagarty's small dogs fell prey to a larger dog and one of them was killed.
Debbie Johnson's small dog was attacked by a large dog and was saved by the vet, but not without considerable expense.
As a small dog owner I have many a times shooed away larger dogs running at large for fear of the same happening to my dog.
There is no reason except shear laziness on the part of some dog owners. Laziness to take their dog for a walk on a leash and have care and control for it rather than just letting it out the door to run amok in our community.
While it is painful that Grandma has lost her dog, and many have said it is tragic, I ask you what people would be say if the big dog had attacked grandma or a small child?
I ask the dog owner's that let their dog run what if that senior citizen or child was your mother, grandma or son or daughter?
Please be responsible and keep your dog tied up for everyone's sake; dog and humans alike.
–Until then,
Ken
