You are here

Are you a penny pincher?

Are you a penny pincher?
I know I do what so many other people do and that is throw pennies in a jar at home.
I also have a separate can full of pennies I have used to play Rumoli for years.
Now there is talk of getting rid of the penny in Canada and it has even been mentioned in the United States as an option as well.
One report last week said that there are over 20 billion pennies in circulation, but very few of them get circulated. They are for the most part sitting in jars in homes all across the land.
So what would happen if the government announced that in six months they would be getting rid of the coin?
Would everyone rush to cash them in for the roughly $200 million in change they are worth? Or would they keep them as a keepsake to play cards with?
Maybe once they were obsolete it would not be illegal to melt them down for their copper content; said to be worth way more than one cent each on present markets.
One person said that pennies are worthless. "You see take a penny leave a penny jars on many store counters. You never see take a loonie, leave a loonie there."
I think I would cash mine in if they were made obsolete rather than pinching them.
–Until then,
