How do moms do it?
I have always respected the work my mom does for all us family members, but over the weekend I gained a new level of respect for moms everywhere.
As you know from reading last week's column, my fiancee had surgery two Friday's ago. That weekend I spent quite a bit of time at the hospital while Kim's mom, Elle, watched the kids. While I did take care of them at night, it was not as intense as this past weekend.
Kim came home from the hospital last Monday and her mom stayed with her, getting the kids off to school, cooking, cleaning, etc.
Friday evening I relieved her of duty for the weekend.
After working all day, then travelling there I was ready for a rest. But that does not happen when there are kids to be taken care of, a house to be cleaned, meals to be prepared.
Out of the car I went and to work doing the things that Kim, as a single mom does all the time; except when incapacitated by an operation.
I don't think I was able to sit down and relax until about 10 that night when the kids were finally sleeping, Kim was in bed and all the chores were done. I was exhausted.
I did that again Saturday and part of Sunday. I travelled home and then worked in my yard for a few hours.
Needless to say I was so wiped I slept quite soundly and did not want to get out of bed on Monday.
The work Moms do is incredible. How they do it, especially working moms with children is beyond me.
All I can say is, thank you to my mom, Kim's mom for taking over and to Kim and all the other moms that do it. You make it look easy!
–Until then,
Ken
