Shocked at event's climax

Utter shock and bewilderment is what I was feeling as the Morson Bass International tournament climaxed Sunday afternoon.
I have covered hundreds if not thousands of events in the past two decades and many, like the MBI have a climactic ending, which I diligently try to capture on film.
But Sunday as the new champions were crowned and excitement was at its height I found myself in shock and not because of who won.
I coached the team to grab their fish and I grabbed the tournament trophy to set up what I thought was going to be a great shot.
I looked through my viewfinder and it was black. "Darn it" I said to myself thinking my camera had gone to sleep and needed to be rebooted.
I quickly did that knowing that the fish could not be there long. But nothing happened.
I tried lots of tricks including changing the batteries, but nothing worked. I had missed the best shot of the event and was in shock.
Fortunately it did not happen at the beginning of the day or else I would have missed much much more of the event.
Hopefully I will have a replacement before week's end and that it will not be too hard to figure out.

–Until then,
