Black Friday was a dark day

Black Friday.... That is what U.S. retailers call the day after their Thanksgiving as it is the day that kick-starts their holiday shopping season and a day that they hope will help put them in the black for the year.
This year I happened to be in the US when Black Friday came. I asked my fiancee if she wanted to get up at 5 a.m. and go to the stores and seek big savings. She said resoundingly "No!"
I was glad.
Later in the day while we were out shopping I heard from one of the clerks at one of the major retailers there that all the deals on T.V.'s and other highly sought after items went out the door within 30 mins of opening.
Another clerk said she could not get to her dept. to work as the aisles were all jammed up with bargain hunters.
Later in the day we heard a worker in New York was trampled to death by early morning bargain hunters.
To me it all seemed insane and even ridiculous. Why should someone lose their life for a t.v. or some other item?
I think the proponents of "Black Friday" need to rethink what they are doing. If they offer good and reasonable deals throughout the holidays the early morning of what was truly a dark day on Friday in New York, it would be better for everyone and business.
