You are here

Nice weather to brighten our spirits

If you are like me then you saw the opportunity to get outside and work the yard Sunday morning and took it.
While forecasters were calling for more gloom and doom, I had a gut feeling we were going to miss the rain on Sunday and that feeling turned out to be true.
Amazingly I had only cut my lawn twice so far this year. Usually by now it is growing back as fast as one can mow it down. And the last time I cut it, two Saturdays ago, it was so cold my fingers were numb from pushing the mower.
Sunday I decided to do it up good. I cut it and for the first time fired up the weed trimmer and put the finishing touches on it.
Then it was weeding time.... the dreaded job that all gardeners hate with a passion.
I remember my first year of gardening and how I tackled that job bare handed pulling anything that did not look like a flower or a vegetable.
Now I am a seasoned veteran. Gloves, two kinds, go with me as I work the different garden spaces. Why two pairs of gloves?
Well all one has to do is grab Stinging Nettle once and you will know why. So thick leather gloves and a spade are used when tackling it. Regular garden gloves work for the rest and the bare hand for some of the others.
When I began gardening I knew what flowers and vegetables I had planted. I never imagined I would have to learn what different species of weeds looked like.
Sunday I enjoyed working in the yard early, only to have it turn cold later in the day. It cheered me up to be out there... I think some more warm weather will serve to brighten all of our spirits, whether it is gardening, fishing, or just reading a book in the nice warm sunshine.

–Until then,
Ken
