Signs of a fleeting youth

It was definitely a week to make me feel like I am truly getting old.
First Ed McMahon died, then Farrah Fawcett and finally Michael Jackson. All icons from my youth. Their deaths made me contemplate how old I really am getting.
The 1970s and 80s were how long ago? I thought it was just yesterday but it was 20-30 years ago and having one of the biggest pop stars of those two decades die, well that just sent me back to remembering how my parents felt when Elvis Presley died.
Through those youthful years we identify with certain things that made us feel vibrant, cool and like we had our own generational identity. As long as they were still alive and kicking, somehow one could, at least I could, feel younger, at least in my mind, than I really am.
As I raked over the reality that my youth is pretty much gone, another real life experience arrived.
My fiancee's eldest daughter had a baby Sunday night, making Kim and I grandparents!!!
If that is not enough to make one realize they are getting on in life, all the comments from friends that love to rip on me calling me and "Old man" when hearing the news about the baby, were.
Oh well not much I can do about it. One thing is for certain my youth was a Thriller and now it has Beat it!
–Until then,
Ken
