Science fiction comes to RR Hospital!
"Beam me up Scotty!"
While it is not a machine to teleport human beings from one place to another like the transporter in Star Trek, the new emergency room ultra-sound at Rainy River Hospital is definitely something a good science fiction story could have.
I went to take photos of the doctors training on the new machine last week expecting to see this giant behemoth of a machine. Instead I saw a computer like machine. A laptop with extra controllers on the keyboard.
When Dr. Beller fired it up, I was amazed! I saw a spine, different organs and fluids. In a matter of an instant, I could see inside a person. Of course I had no idea what I was looking at until Dr. Beller or X-ray tech Andrea McNabb pointed them out.
But for the Drs. it has to be amazing. On Star Trek the Drs. use a hand-held tri-corder to see inside a person. I would be willing to bet that in the not to far off future the emergency ultra-sound technology I saw last week will be even smaller, perhaps the size of a cell phone! Pretty cool stuff and we are lucky to have it in Rainy River!
The Drs., staff, hospital aux. and all who helped fund raise for the machine deserve kudos!
