We all have security blankets of sorts
Everyone likes to be comfortable.
For some people it is a hot bath with incense burning. For others it is simpler things like being in a familiar place.
We start having a comfort zone early in our lives. Babies often find comfort in a soother, or with a stuffed animal or blanket.
Some kids outgrow that quickly and others do not. I have seen some kids cling to their “blankie” or “binnie” for several years after most kids have given their’s up. People sometimes tease them not realizing that for the majority of us, the growing up part really never went away.
While I do not have a blankie that I drag around like Linus from Charlie Brown does, I have my own things that make me feel comfortable or secure. We all do. For some of us it just takes longer to find something that either replaces or feels even more comfortable than that “blankie”... we just don’t realize it.
So next time you tease a little one for clinging to their security blanket, think about what makes you feel safe and secure and bite your tongue. You may very well be teasing yourself indirectly.
