We can all do our part with dogs

There have been many signs of spring in the past week or so.
The Rainy River has opened up, Canada Geese and Sea-gulls are back. All sites for sore eyes.
However, another sign of spring that has appeared that is not so wonderful is connected to man's best friends; our dogs!
With the recession of snowbanks a scourge of dog poop has appeared on sidewalks and in yards all over.
At the same time the number of dogs running at large seems to have also grown as they get spring fever.
There is a bylaw governing the keeping of dogs in Rainy River.
In addition to the requirement of having a license for each dog (which can be purchased at the Town Hall), the law says, "No owner of a dog shall permit the dog to run at large in the municipality."
The law also says, "The owner of a dog shall remove forthwith any excrement left by the dog on any property other than the owner's property"
None of us are perfect, myself included, but at a time of year where female dogs go into heat, and spring fever hits the dogs that have been cooped up all winter, we all need to try harder to obey the law.
I know I pick up my dog's poop and I know I don't like having poop in my yard.
So as Rover begs to get outside, make sure you put them on a leash or a chain in the yard. Or better yet take them for a walk on a leash. Not only will it make them happy it is good for you! And don't forget to bring a bag along to pick up Rover's doo doo.
A little effort can make our town a better place to live in and keep a lot of shoes clean!
–Until then,
Ken
