The dangers of a dry spring and summer
Late last week I travelled to Minneapolis to take my sweetheart to see a specialist there. It was routine follow up and went well.
While at the doctor's office, he told us that if there was no snowfall by March 31st, it would be the first time in 150 years that Minneapolis had not received any snowfall in March!
Wow!
I started thinking about it and to the best of my recollection we have had very little precipitation ourselves here in the Rainy River area.
And while it was raining in Bemidji Saturday afternoon (where my honey lives) it was not raining here.
Then I came back to town after the weekend and learned of the wildfires that burned near the community and how one had nearly taken hunting cabin of a person.
It has been so dry that MNR is comparing the situation to a summer one they call extremely dangerous.
The area is very dry and warm south winds yesterday made it even drier. While I am hoping it is going to be warmer and drier than last summer, I do not want it so dry that we can not have a bonfire for fear of starting a fire.
It definitely could happen. It seems that summers go in cycles and if the weather holds to this pattern we may be in for a busy forest fire situation this year.
Let's hope not.
On the flip side of things, the warm dry weather has seen the robins return! I saw three of them at lunch on Monday!
–Until then,
Ken
