Forgetting about winter
As the weather went over the weekend, I found myself wearing shorts on my deck twice, but that was not to be the case on Saturday when I went to cover the annual Easter Egg hunt at the Rainy River Community Centre.
More than a hundred kids were there ready to do crafts and participate in many fun activities.
However, many of them did not come dressed for the mix of weather we received. I saw some kids wearing winter coats and others with just sweatshirts on.
But who would have guessed that just a few days earlier we would be breaking warm weather temperature records and then be so cold and windy on Saturday!?!
In fact Friday afternoon it was over 62 degrees on the north side of my house and then the next day it barely made it above freezing!!!
When it rained Friday evening and then stayed blustery and cold on Saturday, I thought the rest of the weekend was going to be a wash when it came to the weather.
But Sunday morning it bounced back! The sun was shining and by mid afternoon it was into the 60s again! Out came my shorts, the bicycles and my patio furniture!
As I write this on Monday it is again a wonderful sunny spring day! I noticed tulips up in many locations and in my neighbour's yard the Silver Maple tree is about ready to have its leaves pop open... that has to be the earliest I have ever seen that happen!
While we quickly acclimatize to the early spring weather, we tend to forget about winter.
Let's hope we don't get any rude reminders like we did at the trade show a few years ago when 18 inches of snow fell in one day!
–Until then,
Ken
