Leave the spawn alone
As per usual one could walk across the Rainy River by boat in places over the weekend.
Anglers flock to the Rainy River every year for spring fishing. And why not? It is a chance to catch trophy size walleyes even if you can't keep very many of them.
I have heard stories where boats went out and came back bragging they had caught and released 60, 70 or even 100 fish in one day! Many of those were big females full of eggs so they are even larger than they would be out of spawning season.
Makes for awesome photos and perhaps even a replica trophy on one's wall!
No harm done right?
Well I personally think the spring fishing is wrong.
Why is it that humans can not see that today's actions can have lasting consequences for years to come?
Disturbing spawning walleye on the Rainy River means less productivity when they get down to business. That means less fish in the river and on Lake of the Woods.
It used to be that the main time of the year people fished was in the summer. However, over the past few decades there has been growing pressure on the fisheries in the winter months as well.
So that makes the spring spawn even more important to the future of the winter and summer fishing.
I say the law should be rewritten to prohibit fishing on the Rainy River once the ice is out. It only makes sense and I am sure that any conscientious angler would agree if they look at the benefits of leaving the spawn alone for a few extra weeks every spring.
–Until then,
