Face to face is so much better!
In this highly technologically connected world it is rare that a day goes by that I do not communicate with my brother Pete.
I guess sharing a room all those years ago as teens made us talk to each other and we haven't really stopped since.
Sometimes it is an email at work. Sometimes it is a text message on our cell phones. Others it is via instant messenger on the internet or now on our smart phones. And of course there is the traditional phone call on the land line every once in a while.
We are very connected and so when he and his wife decided to come to Rainy River for a visit and celebrate our father's 64th birthday, I was surprised at how much we had to tell each other.
Friday evening they arrived around 8:30 p.m. and once they were settled in, we sat down around the social spot of my house, the game room and cracked some bubblies.
I figured we might have a bit to talk about the current week's activities and that might fill a half an hour's worth of conversation.
Three hours later as the midnight hour approached we were still siting there discussing so many things.
And when we went to bed I felt a feeling much different than when I speak to him or Janine via technology. I felt complete and happy.
It wasn't until they were getting ready to leave on Sunday that it was the "In person" experience that I had enjoyed.
Sitting across the table from them was much more rewarding than clicking away on the keyboard.
While technology has made keeping in touch with loved ones easier, it has not yet found a way to replace the face to face experience!
Monday morning we again exchanged pleasantries via email. But now I find myself looking forward to our next face to face visit... hopefully later this summer!
–Until then,
Ken
