Canada Day fun

And the winner is....

Danielle Levenec of Rainy River was the lucky winner of the KidSport Kenducky Derby on Canada Day. Her duck, #236, was the first one to cross the finish line which had to be modified because of strong south winds. Instead of dropping the ducks in near Miller's Creek as originally planned they were dropped in the middle of the river in front of Government dock and the wind blew them across a finish line just west of the dock along shore. Rec. Director Meghan Shanks is seen here with KidSport Chair Rebecca Tolen. Shanks has the winner in her hand. Levenec won $592.50 or half the pot! The other half goes to KidSport.

Due to those same strong winds the Canada Day fireworks in Rainy River were cancelled for fear of them blowing back on shore where the crowds and peoples homes are. They have tentatively been moved to Sunday July 18th, the last day of Railroad Daze.

Other events went off without a hitch although the kids had a heck of a time getting decorations to stay on their bikes as they decorated for the annual youth Canada Day Parade. But they managed and a large number of bikes, scooters, wagons and others participated. Turn to page six for more photos or log on to our website at www.RainyRiverRecord.com to see some of them in colour.
