Sylvester Armstrong, 87
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Sylvester Armstrong announces his passing on July 25, 2010 at the La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, Ont, with his family by his side. Sylvester was born April 5, 1923 in Shenston Twp, Ont, to the late James and Margaret Armstrong.
He met the love his life, Shirley Lauzon in August of 1953 at the Pinewood Sports Day. They were united in marriage on November 8th, 1954.
Sylvester was a very hard working man. He worked at farming, cutting pulpwood and christmas trees. He also worked for the M.T.O, the Municipality of Chapple, as well as driving school bus. He was a valued member of the Knights of Columbus.
Sylvester and Shirley lived in Shenston Twp, from 1954 until 1992 and raised their family of 13 children, six girls and seven boys.
Randall (Katie), Angela (Reed) Armstrong, Gayle (Randy) Asselin, Neil (Jane), Nadine, Curtis, Nancy, Virginia (Ross) Caul, Stephen (Misty), Martin, Murray (Laurel), Erin (Leslie) Caul, and Anthony (Tammy). Sylvester will be sadly missed by thirty grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.
It was in 1992 that they moved to Rainy River. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. He very much supported them in all of their endeavors.
He especially enjoyed watching his sons play baseball and would try to go to every game until his health failed in the last couple of years. He would even report the stats in the Rainy River Record and he saved every clipping and put them in his albums.
He also saved pictures and articles of everything his family did and place them into albums.
Sylvester is survived by one brother Melvin (Annie) of Stratton, Ont, and one sister in law on his side of the family, Eileen Armstrong of Atikokan, Ont. He is also survived by sisters in laws Edna Brown, Violet Schram, Judy Rissanen, and brother in law Albert (Michelle) Lauzon. He was predeceased by four grandchildren, Jennifer and Stephen Asselin, Kaela and Dominic Armstrong, son in law Dale Bone, daughter in law Nancy Armstrong and thirteen siblings.
A prayer service was be held at Our Lady of the Way Catholic Church, Pinewood, Ont on Friday July 30, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. with Deacon George Chojko-Bolec officiating. Funeral mass was held from the church on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 1p.m. with Fr. Alan Albao Celebrant. Interment will take place in Our Lady of Immaculant Conception Catholic Cemetery, Stratton, Ont.
Pall Bearers will be Laurie Armstrong, Raymond Armstrong, Douglas Johnson, Nelson Brown, Brad Brown, Jim Armstrong, Phillip Schram, Brian Armstrong, Brent Lauzon, and John Ross.
Honourary Pall Bearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
