Searching for info. on Frenchmans Rock Road
To the Editor:
Frenchmans Rock Road is a branch to the west from #621, being the first road to the north of the Provincial Park Lake of the Woods Township (Morson).
I am gathering information concerning the person from whom the road is named. I plan to make an informational road sign giving a brief history of the person.
I need your help.
There is confusion as to the name. Originally he was Oskar Langlois, a frenchman. Later used the name of Oscar Langlais and is described as an englishman.
He came to this area in 1896 and lived on Lot 17 Concession 1 in Morson until ill health caused him to move to Rainy River in 1939. He died Jan. 13, 1894.
Was there an obituary? With whom did he live in Rainy River? Is anyone alive in Rainy River who knew him? Is he buried in the Rainy River cemetery?
Astra (Mosbeck) Fairnington was a school teacher in the mid 30s. She remembers that he lived in a cave which was lined with lumber and that he preferred to be called Langlais.
My inspiration for this project came when I was told that a resident on Frenchmans Rock Road made the comment, “was there a frenchman?”
