Lack of support is pityful

Why even try?

I am sure that is how Kristine Brown and the Recreation Board are feeling after a dismal turnout at Rockin the River over the weekend.

Recreation Director Monique Gall said people wonder why there is nothing to do at times and noted that when so much effort is put into bringing activities like Rockin the River to life and it is not supported by the community, it is no wonder why there is nothing to do at times.

In addition to the vast amount of volunteer effort put into an event like Rockin the River, there is tremendous cost involved. All of that has to be eaten by someone and in many cases it is non-profit groups like the Recreation Board. In the case of Rockin the River it was eaten by private individuals and the entertainers.

They will surely not want to do something like this again, after all, Once bitten, Twice Shy.

So come next August when we reach the quiet time of summer and people young and old complain there is nothing to do, maybe they should remember that it takes support of events to keep them alive.

I have heard many times over the years that there is nothing to do here, especially from young people. Well over the weekend there was something to do and no one doing it.

The Recreation Board is constantly trying to get things going. Successes have been good but failures have been bad. Even the famous New Year’s Comedy night was not as well attended as it has in the past.

At this rate there will likely be no events going on. And those who think there is nothing to do now will truly have nothing to do.

A community gets what it pays for. If no one pays it gets nothing.

–Until then,
