Anglers net $7,235 in fines on Lake of the Woods

While most anglers stuck to the rules, Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) conservation officers still handed out $7,235 in fines during a three-day fishing enforcement blitz on Lake of the Woods.
From June 10 to 12, nine conservation officers and two deputy conservation officers from Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Fort Frances and Kenora district offices checked 818 anglers, 649 of them non-residents. While 93 per cent were law abiding, 31 were charged, 29 of them were non-residents. Another 23 warnings were issued.
Of those ticketed, 18 were charged with having too many walleye, nine with keeping bass (catch and release only for bass during June on Lake of the Woods; two with failing to produce a licence, one for having no licence and one for using more than one line in open water.
The public is encouraged to help protect its natural resources by reporting violations to the local MNR office or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
