RRHS grads begin their walk of life
Ken Johnston
It was an evening that will forever be a milestone in their lives.
For 28 Rainy River High School Students, last Tuesday marked the beginning of their adult lives as the school held its official graduation ceremonies for 2004.
RRHS principal Bob McGreevy told the class of 2004 that, “It is important that you define yourself and not let others define you.” He further encouraged them to blaze new trails and to think for themselves.
Mike Neilson, chair of the RRHS School Council, spoke of how the school has been like a second home for the class of 2004. “We have a tremendous staff here and the school is like a second family to the students.”
Student Council President Matt Neilson congratulated his classmates on the momentous occasion and spoke of how successful a year the council had. “Can you hear me in the back? If you can it is because the student council purchased a new sound system for the gym this year.” That coupled with several successful events, Neilson said made for a great year.
In addition to the full-time students graduating, there were nine alternative education graduates.
Addressing all the graduates as valedictorian this year was Mark Heyens. Heyens emphasized the benefits of attending a small school. “As graduates we know that good things come in small packages.” He noted that the small school coupled with the small communities that the grads come from will keep the class together. “Our lives will overlap because of the size of our communities.” He completed his remarks by quoting U.S. President Abe Lincoln, “Whatever you are, be a good one.”
In addition to handing out diplomas, RRHS had the pleasure of recognizing six students as Ontario Scholars (graduates achieving an 80% or better average in six grade 12 courses). They are Keshia Brigham, Chelsea Ewald, Paul Lafreniere, Matt Neilson, Nikita Tuesday and Jackie Wood.
On behalf of the board of education, Rainy River trustee Ron McAlister conveyed best wishes and congratulatory remarks to the grads.
