RRHS honours its best athletes and academics

The cream of the athletic and academic crops were honoured at the annual Rainy River High School awards banquet last Thursday evening.
The first students to be honoured were those making the honour roll throughout the year.
Honour roll one term
Matt Bartlett, Julie Campagna, Tim Copenace, Jocelyn Gosselin, Michael Gouliquer, Mark Heyens, Lloyd Mason, Heather Mailloux, Kayla Nordin, Jeff Olson, Nicole Seguin, Travis Wolframe and Jenna Yeo.

Chad Armstrong, Melissa Armstrong, Charles Bechard, Giselle Bonot, Keshia Brigham, Michael Brusven, Val Clark, Jessica Creason, Shantelle Davidson, Ron Ernst, Jamie Hall, Laurie Ivall, Marty Johnston, Kyle Kuzyk, Katelyn Nielson, Carling Nordin, Stacey Olson, Adam Usiski, Jaime Vandenbrand and Jackie Wood.

All received certificates recognizing their accomplishment.
Principal Bob McGreevy then had the pleasure of presenting the Ontario Principals’ Council Student Leadership Award to Trevor Bonot.

Gold Jacket Award
This award, not presented every year, goes to athletes who have gone over and above the call of duty in their sport for a minimum of 2 years.
This year gold jackets were presented to Trevor Bonot and Marion Reimund.
International sports coop
Lake of the Woods High School Athletic Director Brian Novak spoke of the great relationship between RRHS and LoW in athletics. There is currently a coop in cross-country, track, boys hockey and just announced–girls hockey.
Novak brought two awards across the border with him. Matt Neilson received “Most Dedicated Boy” in varsity track and his father, Mike Neilson received an award for his volunteering as a coach with the track team.

The team presented Coach John Laplante with a plaque in honour of his dedication to coaching them from grade 8 to senior. Seven of his starters will be leaving the school this year.
Laplante said that they had a great season and just missed Ofssas.

Coach Don Gall said the team had a very competitive year with a lot of new players. They finished 8-8.

Coach Joel Banbury was happy with the team’s performance noting that a highlight for him was beating White Fish Bay both times... something that he said has not happened for a long time. They were one win shy of the playoffs.

Coach Jeff Rajala was on top of the world after coaching this team as they won NORWOSSA gold. He said the season will likely be the highlight of his coaching career.

Coach Guy Arpin said that it had to be the toughest year in the league with all the teams being so close. RRHS finished 5th, but the difference between that and 2nd was only one win.
