The 2010 Girls’ basketball teams are headed to Kenora to fight for the gold at St. Thomas Aquanis High School this week. On Tuesday the Sr. team will have to earn the right to play in the final while the undefeated Jr. Team will get the bye and play on Wednesday for the NorWOSSA Title. It has been a fast and furious season with plenty of pain and glory along the way.The senior girls are ending their regular season with a 9-3 record. They lost two games to St Thomas Aquinas School by less than 5 points each and one to Red Lake by 4. These are the two teams they will be meeting in the play offs so it should be exciting. “This is the most talented team I have ever coached - they work hard and want to win.” says Coach Rebecca Tolen.
Guards Kaylee Heyens and Courtney Hansen led in points with several of the others in a close chase for the title of high scorer. Neither player would have half of those points without the help of their shooting guards Audrey Chojko-Bolec and Kailee Jodoin. With 6’1” centre Rylee Mowe and the high-jumping forwards, the Sr. Team is a force to be reckoned with under the boards. They are a fast breaking team with Chelsey Brown, Madison Boisvert, and Lindsay Bourre leading the way with broken passes and quick drives.
Jaylene Anderson and Kathryn Clifford are ruthless on defense and creating offensive scoring opportunities.
Coach Tolen is told by referees and coaches alike what a great team she has. “I am proud of the clean, strong game my girls play and am looking forward to representing RRHS at the NorWOSSA playoffs once again.”The junior girls finished their regular season with a 30 to 20 win over the Atikokan Voyageurs. High scorer was Jessica Haw with 8 points, while Hailey Desserre and Myan Miller added 6 each. The owls finished in first place in NorWOSSA play with a record of 10 and 0.
Throughout the season the team has played excellent defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 16.1 points per game. At the offensive end of the court, the Owls are led by point guards Shauna Moen and Skylar Arpin, who distribute the ball and make sure all players can contribute to the scoring. If one player is having an off game, someone else steps up to score a few baskets. The team is a good mix of grade nine and grade ten players who have worked hard at playing together. It is an exciting team to watch due to their quickness and unselfish play.
Both teams are looking forward to some close games and are excited by their prospects this week. GOOD LUCK OWLS!!
