District gets high speed dial-up internet

While it is not quite greased lightning, Jam21.net’s new high speed dial up service gives residents outside Fort Frances much faster internet options.
Dave Ashworth, owner of Jam21 said that, “This was the best way we could invest some money and give people out in the district better service.”
His company installed a new server for the strict purpose of accommodating high speed dial-up internet service for existing and new customers that do not live in Fort Frances. As of June 15th the service has been available and so far the response has been overwhelming.
Special software on the server and that the customer downloads allows for much faster surfing of the internet and both sending and receiving emails. The programs allow for the customer to compress information found on websites, hence speeding up their access to the sites. Ashworth said that the compression may make an image or graphic seem a bit grey, but it does save time and, “If you want to see the full resolution you just right click on it.”
Using a slider bar the customer determines how much compression they want to use. The more they use the faster their surfing and emailing will be. “This is the same technology used by AOL and Net Zero,” said Ashworth.
One thing he wants people to know is that the new service does not speed up the baud rate one gets on their modem (i.e. connection speed 28-56 K). “Once on the net it speeds up how you access sites and send and receive emails,” explained Ashworth.
He said that this technology has become big in the United States and he expects it to really catch on in Canada.

“We are trying to be everyone’s one stop internet provider,” concluded Ashworth.
