Riverview teams bring home gold and silver medals

By Mark Jodoin
Coach

Over the weekend, the boy’s and girl’s volleyball teams from Riverview wrapped up their season at the Regional Championships in Fort Frances.
After a shaky start to the morning, both teams settled in quite nicely with some solid play.
The boy’s team went 4 and 0 in the round-robin to take top spot in their pool which put them in the semi-finals against Robert Moore.
With their first challenge of the day, the team came up short in their first of three games, losing a close 25-21 game. The boys bounced back with some of their best play of the day. They managed to take the next two games which moved them into the finals against St. Francis who had taken two straight games from Crossroads in their semi-final.
St. Francis was the one team who had beaten them in the Atikokan tournament back on Oct. 30.
Riverview came out playing their best volleyball of the day and took two games straight by the scores of 25-23. The boys are looking forward to hoisting a regional’s banner in the Riverview gym.
The girl’s team also did extremely well at the regionals. After losing a close match to Mine Center to start the morning, the girls rebounded with three straight wins which put them in first place in their pool.
Their semi-finals were against Robert Moore in which the Riverview girls took two straight games. As in the boy’s tournament, it came down to St. Francis vs. Riverview in the finals.
Although the girls made it close with a 25-23 loss in game one, they didn’t quite have enough to beat St. Francis and ended up taking silver. But, the icing on the cake came when the Riverview girls were presented with the Sportsmanship team of the tournament. Mr. Jodoin and all of the girls on the Riverview team would like to say a special “Thanks” to Danika Diebel and Skylar Arpin who came out faithfully and worked with the girls on their volleyball skills. It made a huge difference.
