“I was carrying her then, and now she is carrying me,” said Myrna Armstrong, referring to her daughter Jen who skipped their team to the ‘A’ Championship in the 46th annual RR Ladies Curling Bonspiel Sunday.
Myrna was pregnant with Jen when she won the bonspiel 25 years ago.
Jen was joined by mom at third, Sarah Berg at 2nd and Heather Anderson at lead to take on Norma Blight, Donna Ivall, Janet Schaaf and Barb Legiehn for the championship game.
Armstrong got a break when Donna Ivall, who threw skip’s rocks, was light with the hammer in the first end and bumped another Armstrong rock in to give them 3.
Armstrong added one more to lead 4-0 after 2 ends. Blight answered back with one in the third.
Jen had a chance to take a white out to count 3 in the 4th, but was wide and only counted 1 to increase her lead 5-1.
Ivall returned fire in the 5th. A measure for a much need pair of rocks yielded only one point for Blight’s foursome. It was now 5-2.
The rest of the game belonged to Armstrong’s team. They scored one in the 6th, two in the 7th and that saw Blight resign. Final score was 8-2.
In the ‘B’ Event Monique Gall’s rink, Gabe Langlais-third, Michelle Tymkin-second and Donna Davidson-lead, looked like they were going to run away with the game, leading 4-1 after four ends. However a determined Heidi Bolen-Kreger rink, Janet Wolanicki, Sandy Shrumm and Danielle Shrumm, battled back to tie the game 4-4 in the 5th end. They then took the lead in the 6th but only by one after Gall drew in to stop Bolen’s team from counting six.
In the 7th Gall drew in for a five ender to regain the lead 9-5.
Bolen rallied in the 8th but only for two to give Gall a 9-7 victory.
It was a battle of the Armstrongs in the the ‘C’ Event. Angie Armstrong’s team, Kari Brigham, Cheryl Matthew and Alicia Nordin took on Debbie Armstrong-skip, Keshia Brigham-third, Janice Armstrong-second and Linda Holmes-lead.
Debbie’s team got an early break when Angie was outside with the hammer in the first and bumped one of Deb’s rocks in to give them 2.
Debbie added to the lead with a three ender in the 2nd. But a determined Angie Armstrong rink battled back picking up one in the 3rd and a three ender in the 4th.
Debbie padded her lead with one in the 5th, but it was not enough to deter Angie who was down 6-4. She had a chance to draw for three and take the lead, but was short and tied it at 6-6 in the 6th.
Debbie’s team then scored three in the seventh and in the eighth did their best to plug the front of the house with guards and force Angie to make some tough shots. Angie could not get by the guards and Debbie’s team won 10-6.
