The Rainy River High School Junior Boys Basketball team has been slam-dunking the competition all season long and last Wednesday was no exception when the Whitefish Bay Winterhawks visited Rainy River.
The RRHS Jr. Boys Owls have dominated the competition all season, losing only once to Sioux Lookout in a very close game. In the first half they did just that against the Winterhawks. It was 8-2 after the first quarter and by half-time it was 20-2.
In the 3rd quarter the Winterhawks played a little tighter defense only allowing the Owls two points while picking up six more themselves. It was 22-8 at the end of the third.
In the fourth the Owls iced the victory with 10 more points while only allowing the Winterhawks three points. Final score was 32-11. The Jr. Boys are now 7-1 and seem to be destined for NORWOSSA gold later this month.
In Senior Boys action, It was all RRHS again. At the end of the first quarter it was 17-5 for the Owls. The second quarter the Owls appeared to be on a mission to get Dan O’Connell’s name on the score sheet. It took seven of the eight minutes in the quarter of everyone feeding him the ball before he sunk it. He missed at least six times before he picked up two points for the team. At the end of the half it was 27-12 for RRHS.
In the third quarter both teams scored just about the same number of points. Rainy scored 14 and WFB 13 for a end of the quarter score of 41-25.
In the 4th quarter the Winterhawks rallied and held the Owls to only 8 points. However the Owls held on winning 49-43. They are 4-4 and can make the playoffs still.
In volleyball action the Owls Junior girls team won in three straight. They have to win the rest of their games this season to make the playoffs.
The senior girls lost a heart breaker 3-2. Coach Guy Arpin was not expecting to even win one game against the number one ranked Winterhawks. But his team got it together and gave the Hawks a run for their money. Scores were 11-25, 25-22, 10-25, 25-18 and 15-7. If they win their next two games and beat Sioux Lookout they will make the playoffs.
The Owls will play host to the Ignace Falcons today (Feb. 10) and Pelican Falls tomorrow. The will then go on the road to Ignace on the 18th and to Pelican Falls and Sioux Lookout on the 19th.
All are welcome to come and cheer on the Owls. There is no admission charge.
