Next Monday is Family Day in Ontario and the Rainy River Recreation Centre will be buzzing with activities for families!
The day will begin at Noon with free hotdogs and hot cocoa, sponsored by the Northern Lights Credit Union.
After that families will get to participate in numerous activities. “We have created a schedule for younger families and older ones,” said Rec. Director Meghan Shanks. The younger group is a family with the majority of children 10 and under. The older is with a majority of kids 11 and over.
Families get to choose two of four activities to participate in. The younger group has a choice of curling, family craft, sliding/tobogganing or snow-shoeing. The older group can choose from curling, snow-shoeing, broom ball or family craft.
People that pre-register for the day by this Friday can choose the two activities they wish to participate in or if a family registers on the day of the event they will be assigned activities where space allows.
These activities will run until 2 p.m. at which time the always popular family relay race will begin. It will feature many activities in and around the facility. Prizes will be awarded for the winning team. Shanks said people should not worry if they do not have enough people to make a relay team (six or more), “We will pair you with another family.”
At 3:30 p.m. there will be public skating in the arena.
There is a $2 charge per person for the entire day! So it is a bargain!
Anyone wishing to pre-register can do so at Riverview School, The Best Start Hub or the Rainy River Public Library.
The event is being run by the Rainy River Rec. Board, The Best Start Hub and the Public Library.
The annual Shiver on the River 5 km run will also be held in conjunction with Family Day. Weather permitting it will see runners take a course on land to the river and back on land back to the Rec. Centre. There is a $10 pre-registration fee or $15 on the day of. Registration can be done on line at the Rec. Board’s Facebook page or by calling Shanks at 852-4446.
